Nursing as a Career – Reviewed
A Submitted Review from Shannon, (9/7/2011)
“I thought this book was excellent! It was a fun, easy read! In fact, I’ve already reccomended it to people I know – some already nurses and some students. I thought it was well written and researched. I thought you did an unbelievable job relating to your reader, especially in the beginning when you talk about what different and personal situations in your life led to your choice of nursing as your career. Many women that I have met that were going into nursing were women with children and can understand that struggle. I also liked that you touched on different ways you experimented with studying, how you encourage your reader to try different things to discover how they learn best, and you also added finding a way to relieve stress. This is important to many people, and I liked your idea for a study group.
The personal nursing experiences really helped me connect to what I was reading. They were interesting and funny and showed the love you have for what you do. I thought the way you talked about your sister really brought the reader to another level and showed that tragedies/illnesses, such as cancer, can happen to any family and that nurses are not invincible to these things. It helped me understand that we are hurt by the very things we work to save just like our patients are. I realized that as a nurse you are more than just a healthcare provider, but you are who your patients trust and rely on.
I enjoyed the second half of the book as well. I thought your research and factual statistics showed that you really put a great effort into your book so that your reader would have the most accurate and up to date information. I liked that you listed the many different things someone could do with a nursing license, and that it’s not just to use in hospitals or doctor’s offices. You also talked about the many ways to further your career in nursing and take on very important roles in the workplace. Nursing is not always about being a floor nurse who runs around all day, but doesn’t recieve any acknowledgement from adminstration. It gives people a drive to do more and push themselves further.
Overall, I thought it was excellently written and researched all around. I can tell you put alot of effort into it and it payed off.”
